Newfoundland PRIDE:  Heroic Past, Proud Future
Pride week in St. John's launches July 16

SUNDAY July 16 will see the launch of Gay Pride Week in St. Johnís.  This event is organized by volunteers from a number of GLBT and other interested community organizations such as Newfoundland Gays and Lesbians for Equality (NGALE), Newfoundland Amazon Network and LBGT-MUN (Memorial University).

NGALE Chair Michael Riehl summed up the feeling on The Rock this week:

Pride Week will allow us to celebrate the 31st anniversary of the gay rights movement.  Society in general has come so far since 1969.  In Newfoundland and Labrador, sexual orientation is now in the provincial human rights code.  This year, federal legislation extended the same rights and responsibilities to same sex couples as common law couples.  The province, through the Justice Department, has promised to amend provincial legislation to include same-sex couples.  Now it is important for the GLBT community to become a recognized part of Newfoundland society.  That is why this yearís international theme for Pride Week is Heroic Past, Proud Future.

A press conference is scheduled for Monday, July 17 at 11:00 am and will be followed by the raising of the Rainbow Flag at St. Johnís City Hall at noon.  This will be the second time the Rainbow Flag has been flown during Gay Pride celebrations in St. Johnís.

Other activities are scheduled throughout the week, culminating with a public rally and celebratory march with a number of speakers at City Hall at 2:00 pm on Sunday, July 23.  The participants will then walk along Duckworth St. and Water St. followed by a BBQ and social at the Liquid Ice Nite Club (186 Water Street).

Members of the general public are encouraged to attend events that are scheduled everyday.  Information on the events are available by calling the NGALE phone line at 753-GAYS (4297) or accessing the NGALE homepage at
