Fantino, who has been chief for only six months, came to the job under a cloud.  Previously he had been chief of the London, Ontario force were he found himself embroiled in a bitter feud with gays and lesbians over an alleged boy-sex ring.  London activists accused him of waging a war against the community.

In the past six months Fantino has carefully been cultivating members of Toronto's gay community.  Just prior to his swearing-in he held a public community meeting, one of many he has had since with other communities in the city.  The meeting ended with few being swayed.  But, for Fantino it was a start.

Tonight, came his boldest attempt to attract the community and dispel suspicion.

Fantino chose one of the most popular bars in Toronto's Gay Village to hold what he called "The Chief's Gay Pride Reception."

Hundreds of gays and lesbians attended.  So did the press.

Fantino praised Gay Pride organizers saying the week long festival is the only event which attracts more than half a million people in Toronto and has a zero crime rate.

Fantino was charming, and spoke to any number of people.  And, many said afterward they felt Fantino was trying to do a good job in understanding the community.  Others were not so sure.  One man leaving Sailor tonight called it "just a publicity stunt."
