Montreal to Auction Hand-Painted Plate by Madonna for HIV/AIDS Residence

On Thursday May 18 the evening card will pit Madonna against champion Canadian sprinter Bruny Surin ... with paintbrushes no less!

These famous personalities have contributed to a wealth of stunning celebrity plates to be auctioned in benefit of the National Council of Jewish Women's Maison Chesed, a future residence for persons living with HIV/AIDS.

An impressive 200 plates have been graciously hand-painted, signed and donated by celebrities spanning the fields of film, television, music, sports, art literature and politics.  These masterpieces will be auctioned off at a five-star fundraiser at Montreal's historic Le Windsor, one of Canada's oldest and most unique buildings.

Lillian Shoub, President of the National Council of Jewish Women (Montreal Section) - the organizers of the auction, stressed the infrastructure for service delivery is already in place.

"While the actual residence is still in the planning stages, we have already been providing services for people living with HIV/AIDS for over two years," said Mrs. Shoub, a longtime community volunteer.  "Our optimum goal is to create and provide a caring environment for people in crisis who have nowhere to go," states Mrs. Shoub.

The celebrity plate project started two years ago and has since blossomed under the supervision of a full-time coordinator and devoted committee members.  Celebrities spanning every conceivable field were contacted and many responded enthusiastically, submitting art that will be included in a colour catalogue - sure to become a collectible in itself!

Some of the celebrities represented include renowned actor William Shatner, acclaimed author Margaret Atwood, figure-skating champion Elvis Stojko, sprinting gold medalist Bruny Surin, news anchor Peter Kent, comedian Howie Mandel, rock band The Tragically Hip, and film director Arthur Hiller (Past President of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences).

While the majority of plates feature the art of Canadian personalities, some are from American 'friends' of Maison Chesed, including fashion designer Tommy Hilfiger, Emmy Award winner Fyvush Finkel (Picket Fences) and Adam West (Batman).

The "Canadian Celebrity Plate Auction" will take place at the Le Windsor Ballroom, 1170 Peel St.  Cocktails, VIPs, table sponsors ($2000 per), and dinner guests ($200) will begin at 6:30 PM followed by a live auction beginning at 8:00 PM.

Auction-Only tickets for $50 will be available at the door at 9:00 PM for viewing and bidding on plates remaining.
