Ottawa City-Wide Campus Pride Week Opens

ONLINE:  FRIDAY JANUARY 14, 7:03 PM EST (GMT-5).

With a drag show in the Unicentre, rainbow banners, information booklets and condoms for all, the annual City-Wide Campus Pride Week opened today.

A multitude of events scheduled over the next nine days at all three post-secondary campuses is scheduled.  The Opening Party at the University of Ottawa's Nox bar tonight will kick it off - and the winner of the amateur drag contest there will move on to perform at Icon.

Tomorrow afternoon will see a Downtown Scavenger Hunt, followed by brunch Sunday at the Rock Bottom Grill, a pool tournament in the afternoon at Club Polo Pub, and the showing of "The Watermelon Woman" at Carleton University that evening.

"Pride Week gives us additional exposure," said Ottawa U's Pride Centre Co-Coordinator Jason McCallum.  "It's nice to get that type of publicity for Centres like us.  Our membership does not reflect the population of the University very well," he added.

Volunteers at Carleton University will be working a Traveling Info Table throughout the week at that campus while the University of Ottawa hosts daily panels on topics of parenting, politics and religion.  Many of the city's GLBT voluntary-sector organizations will be covering the floor of the Ottawa Unicentre Wednesday during the all-day Info Fair.  Algonquin College Pride will host a similar event there on Thursday.  Movies are featured almost nightly at Carleton.  A canal skate to be warmed-up afterwards with hot chocolate at the Lookout is scheduled for Thursday as well.

Although there has never been an incident of violence at these festivities, Mr. McCallum said that Security at the University of Ottawa will ensure that their presence is known, even though additional services from them were not requested.
